An Introduction To Steel & Aluminum Dock Plates
Dock plates, which are different that dock boards, come in a variety of different sizes and capacities.
A dock plate does not have reinforcing curbs at each side of the dock plate and therefore the carrying capacity is much less than a dock board.
Dock boards have reinforcing curbs for added strength and capacity and are typically used with forklifts whereas dockplates are typically used when operating with hand trucks or manual pallet jacks which weigh far less than a typical forklift.
As well, dock plates can be more easily moved into position as they are much lighter than a dock board. Aluminum dock plates are much lighter than steel dock plates but they are more costly to purchase due to the premium cost of aluminum over steel.
To determine the correct dock plate to use, you will need to know the following information.
- The total gross weight of the load, operator and the materials handling equipment combined.
- The width of the dock plate required.
- The length of the dock plate required.
- The maximum height differential between the dock and the truck deck. Please be aware that the truck deck should always be higher than the dock. If not, you may want to consider using wheel risers which Fleetman can also supply.
Every dock plate comes complete with vertical legs that are attached to the underside of the dock plate to prevent the plate from slipping back and forth between the truck and the dock. It is very important that the gap between the truck and the dock be small enough so that the dock plate could never slip out of position.
